When King Micipsa of Numidia died, his adoptive son usurped the throne. This man, Jugurtha, gained ample experience commanding Rome’s auxiliary forces. Rome could not accept the usurpation of the throne of their loyal ally Numidia. The Jugurthine War lasted from 112 to 105 BC, and saw the rogue King Jugurtha face multiple Roman military expeditions.
