Life in Japan has stopped! The worst snowstorm in history, snow depth of 2 meters in Hokkaido Natural disaster 20 December 2023. In Hokkaido, the weather has been tumultuous, particularly from the side of the Sea of Japan. The city of Rumoi experienced the highest snowfall in a 24-hour period in recorded history, significantly impacting the lives of its residents. Snowfall has persisted in Rumoi since yesterday, blanketing the walls of buildings in a thick layer of snow. Snow clouds continue to loom over Rumoi City in Hokkaido, including throughout today. In Horonuke, a district of Rumoi, an unprecedented 77 cm of snow fell within 24 hours until 11 a.m., marking the most intense snowfall on record, with a peak depth of 141 cm. Due to the heavy snowfall, all seven elementary and junior high schools in Rumoi City were closed. Buses and private cars came to a standstill, leaving residents paralyzed and the transportation network completely disrupted. Citizens took to social media to express the severe impact of the snowstorm, describing the situation as a complete breakdown in the city. The blizzard has made life in the city unbearable for its residents. Cars have been parked since yesterday, but they are buried under so much snow that it is impossible to move them. With continuous heavy snowfall, snowdrifts have reached a height of 2 meters, impeding snow removal efforts. The national highway in Chashin, Bibai City, Hokkaido, shows no signs of vehicle movement at all. Traffic jams, stretching up to 4 kilometers, occurred from around 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., caused by a car stuck in front of the others. In Bibai City, 30 cm of snow fell within 12 hours until 4 a.m. exacerbating the challenging conditions. The extreme weather has disrupted daily life, causing widespread inconvenience and hindering essential services. Authorities are struggling to cope with the unprecedented snowfall, leading to delays in snow removal and traffic management. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather conditions improve. Emergency response teams are working around the clock to clear roads and provide assistance to those in need. The local government has declared a state of emergency in Rumoi City, urging residents to take necessary precautions. Meteorologists predict that the snowfall may continue for the next few days, exacerbating the already critical situation. Hokkaido residents are coming together to support each other, offering help to those in distress and sharing information on social media. As the region grapples with this unprecedented winter onslaught, efforts are underway to restore normalcy and address the challenges posed by the relentless snowfall.
