Autumnal Work Of Women’s Land Army (1917)

Autumnal Work of Women’s Land Army - trussing and thatching - 1917. Location of events unknown - somewhere in Britain. Women hoeing in field. Harvest time; in orchard. Women picking fruit; up on ladders at apple trees. Carrying baskets of apples; each woman emptying hers. Group of women taking a break; sitting on the ground or on their overturned baskets; trees in BG - nice looking scene. Wow - a woman way up high; past the top of her ladder; on a ledge of what looks like a huge haystack with sharp angles —but is actually a sod house; with hay or straw as insulation - they are replacing the old stuff with new; she cuts loose another section of hay and carries it down ladder. Woman unties bale as other women watch. Woman thatching roof of this same house. Anyway then there’s a CU of 2 young women in large-brimmed hats; one holding handle of tool; both laughing. ECU Land Army arm band on woman’s sleeve. Agriculture; war work; Women’s Land Army; Housing; building; construction; architecture
