Workshop: William Booth II Double Bass Ep 1, Inspection, Planning and Taking Apart

In this episode, George, Dan and Ian inspect the William Booth II double bass and start to make a plan of the work that will need to be done. When planning the restoration, care must be taken to see how the back and front fit to the ribs, marking with a chinagraph pencil any areas that will need attention. Dan marks these areas before Ian removes the neck, making the double bass easier to move around and take apart. Next, the front and back plates are carefully removed with a sharp knife so that work can begin on the four elements of the instrument. When restoring an instrument, work is completed on the front, back, ribs and scroll before combining the elements to make a complete double bass. You will see on the upper back by the button that there is a poorly fitted unoriginal piece of ebony with white glue holding it on. This will be removed and replaced with some well-matched wood.
