Built myself a custom CNC Follow Rest for threading long shafts.
A while back we received an order for a decent quantity of these long threaded shafts. The thread was an acme screw thread and we could not get it done with out supporting the shaft while threading.
So we built ourselves a custom CNC follow rest that bolted down to the side of the carriage and followed the tool as it was threading.
First I tried to make a bronze V-block without a top clamp but the bronze was chewed up quick and did not last long at all. Next I took a bit of left over AR-400 armor plate and made a new V-block with a top clamp that kept the shaft snug and everything was nice and rigid. The follow rest is adjustable and it can be used for different diameters.
As you can see with the second part of the video it worked like a charm.
Another innovative machining trick that got the job done.
