In Russia’s Orenburg region - Thousands of homes flooded as dam ruptures

Officials have reported that thousands of individuals are undergoing evacuation in the Russian Urals following a rupture in a section of the embankment dam located in the mountainous city of Orsk. Heavy earth-moving machinery has been deployed to the site in an effort to reinforce the dam. An emergency declaration was issued for the entire Orenburg region earlier due to rising levels in the Ural River caused by melting ice. Authorities have expressed concerns that approximately 10,000 residents may be within the flooding zone, with as many as 4,000 houses at risk of inundation. Local emergency services are actively engaged in flood containment efforts in Orsk, situated approximately 1,800km east of Moscow. With a population of roughly 230,000, Orsk evacuees are being relocated to nearby schools. Unverified footage circulating on the Telegram messenger app purportedly depicts water rushing through a breach in an earthen dam. The region, encompassing Orsk, other Urals provinces, and portions of neighboring Kazakhstan, has experienced widespread flooding in recent days.
