Description:
Explore the fascinating history of the world’s oldest borders that still exist today! First, we delve into the Portugal-Spain border, which holds the title of the oldest uninterrupted border, established in 1297. The northern part of this border has remained unchanged since Portugal’s founding in 1143, and the southern part since 1267. Despite the town of Olivenza not being returned by Spain after its 1801 invasion, the Portugal-Spain border remains a significant historical boundary.
Next, we visit Monaco, France’s tiny neighbor. Completely surrounded by France, Monaco’s border has stayed the same since 1297. Over the centuries, the surrounding country changed from France to Genoa, then back to France, followed by Sardinia, and finally, France again.
Finally, we uncover the world’s oldest border: Andorra’s borders with both Spain and France. These borders have been largely unchanged since 1278, when a land dispute between the County of Foix and the Diocese of Urgell was resolved, establishing joint sovereignty over Andorra.
Join us as we journey through time and geography, exploring these ancient borders that have stood the test of time. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more intriguing historical and geographical insights!

These are the oldest borders in the world that still exist today!
First, we have the Portugal-Spain border, which is the oldest uninterrupted border, established in 1297.
The northern part of this border has remained the same since Portugal’s birth in 1143, and the southern part since 1267.
Although the border town of Olivenza was never returned by Spain after its invasion in 1801,
we can still include the Portugal-Spain border in the top.
In second place, we have France’s neighbor, Monaco. Completely surrounded by France, its border has remained unchanged since 1297.
The only difference is which country surrounds it. Initially, it was France,
then Genoa, then France again, followed by Sardinia, and now France once more.
But the world’s oldest border is Andorra’s borders with both Spain and France, which have basically remained unchanged since 1278.
This was when a land dispute between the County of Foix and the Diocese of Urgell
ended by establishing joint sovereignty over Andorra.
