Sade - Smooth Operator Bass Cover

I have always loved this song since it came out and to get a bass solo in a popular song from the 80’s was not very common so that made this one even better in my book. Released in 1984, Smooth Operator was on Sade’s debut album Diamond Life which features the amazing Paul S Denman on bass. For this cover, I am using the bass I call the “Killer SUB.“ This is a Sterling by Music Man SUB Series bass but has all updated electronics including a John East MMSR preamp that is a very close copy of the late 70’s Stingray’s and sound amazing! I have an actual 1979 Stingray and this preamp gets you very close with the tone so I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get that pre Ernie Ball 2 band Stingray tone. This also has a Nordstrand MM 4.2 pickup that emulates the late 70’s Stingray tone and this pickup installed with the John East preamp just gets you that great old school Stingray tone. I read that Paul S Denman used flatwounds on his Stingray so I installed some LaBella Olinto Signature flatwounds which sound fantastic on this bass. I am plugged into my Origin Effects Bassrig ’64 Black Panel going through an Origin Effects Cali76 Compact Bass compressor.
