The event has been described as the biggest ecological disaster in Peru’s recent history. Around 6,000 barrels of oil spilled in the ocean from the La Pampilla refinery near Lima, Peru. Several beaches were closed due to the oil spill, with clean-up efforts starting to help animals, such as penguins, covered in oil. The incident has caused anger in Peru, with protests taking place due to the impact on citizens. The oil has contaminated the habitats of marine animals such as sea lions and dolphins, as well as Peru’s fishing areas.
