The Mathematical Brilliance of the A4 Paper Size Design

What does the term “A4“ mean in the famous paper size? Its design was the first of its kind so it was known as the A-series. Every time this paper was split in half, a smaller size was created. A number was used to keep track of how many times it was split in half. If we started from A0 as the original size, it was split in half four times to achieve A4. But why is this so special? Interestingly, the dimensions were thoughtfully designed by a mathematical standard. It was not random chance or an accidental discovery. It was all in the numbers! A0 has an approximate area of one square metre, with dimensions HxW 1189mm x 841mm. As such, this paper has a certain aspect ratio of height to width. Theoretically, this ratio is the square root of two! It is the only ratio in the universe that allows a paper to be split in half so perfectly, that its smaller counterpart would have the same exact ratio! And this would enable it to continue halving itself into smaller sizes indefinitely! This impressive feature also m
