Inside the Mexican city ravaged by the fight for control of the Sinaloa cartel

A bloody gang war is engulfing the Mexican city of Culiacán, leaving dozens of bodies littering the streets. But this war involves two factions of what was once one of the world’s most successful criminal gangs. The brutal fight has pitted family and supporters of Mexico’s most infamous drug lord, Joaquín El Chapo Guzman, against backers of the group’s cofounder and former El Chapo confidante, Ismael ’El Mayo’ Zambada. Zambada claimed in July he had been abducted in Mexico by one of El Chapo’s sons and flown to the US, where he is facing life in jail. Reports suggest the Guzman family blame Zambada for El Chapo’s arrest - he was jailed for life in the US in 2019.
