Plein Air & Studio Painting: St Anthony Head Cornwall

This oil painting began life en plein air in Cornwall on a mild March morning this week. I headed for St Anthony-in-Meneage and painted the view across the bay towards St Anthony Head on the Roseland Peninsula. I wanted a good view of Carrick Roads from the Lizard for my exhibition at Truro Museum this summer. I wasn’t disappointed! It was an amazing morning painting outdoors and actually quite warm in the March sunshine! After a couple of hours working on location, I headed back to the studio where I let the painting dry for a few days before completing in the studio at Krowji, Redruth. I painted onto a 60cm x 40cm plywood panel using my regular palette of oil paints: Titanium White, Cad Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cad Red, Magenta, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Manganese Blue and Ivory Black. I also used turpentine and my homemade medium: turps, Stand oil, Damar Varnish. For the studio session I used Winsor Red instead of Cadmium Red. T
