Original title: Salt of the Earth (1954) Black & White version: Based on actual events; New Mexico’s Empire Zinc mine, Mexican-American workers protest the unsafe work conditions and unequal treatment & wages compared to their Anglo counterparts. This film was made by blacklisted film-makers in retaliation for being blacklisted. They reasoned that since they weren’t allowed to work in Hollywood, they might as well make a film to fit the “crime“ for which they had been accused of by the Un-American House Activities Committee.
