Cambodia - Fighting continues

(15 Jul 1997) T/I: 10:14:02 GS 10:27:08 Troops loyal to Cambodia’s Second Prime Minister Hun Sen and FUNCINPEC troops loyal to First Prime Minister Prince Ranariddh were on Monday (14/7) preparing for a major offensive in the north of the country. Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) forces backed by tanks, armoured personnel carriers and artillery continued to move north on route 68 through Seam Reap province without opposition. Supporters of FUNCINPEC forces claimed their retreat was a tactical withdrawal. Meanwhile, urgently needed food aid was delivered to the capital, Phnom Penh Tuesday (15/7), nine days after the shelling had stopped. 3,000 people who had been made homeless by the fighting, were recipients of the aid.
