Western AF presents Dean Johnson | “Faraway Skies“ ... After more than 15 years of playing music, Dean Johnson’s debut album “Nothing for Me, Please“ is releasing the first week of May. It took us planning the first-ever Western AF Showcase to finally get Dean to Wyoming. Getting this man from Seattle, which people had heard little about, was our top priority. Dean entranced the audience with his transcendental voice and impossibly clever lyrics. Now that we finally had him in Wyoming we took full advantage and captured this performance that we had been waiting on for years. The song, “Faraway Skies“ felt like our white whale. As much as we toiled in the planning of this vid, a lot of it came down to improv — embracing what the day will bring for light, the weather, and Dean’s performance was hard to commit to one concept for how to capture this video. Do we shoot it in Seattle? Does he come to Wyoming and surround himself with buffalo? The lyrics take you in and out of both urban and rural settings. It’s hard to pick what’s best. At the end of the day, it felt right to have Dean with just the sky behind him. It was all we really needed, the song would work its magic. It is hard to let go after all the sweating we did to make this a video worthy of the song itself. After the sun went down we had the realization that it had been a beautiful day. We were surrounded by friends. In our hearts, whenever we hear “Faraway Skies,“ we’ll forever be transported to that day of making art with friends.
