Alexander Scriabin - Prelude and Nocturne for the Left Hand, Op. 9

The Prelude and Nocturne, for the left hand, is a despondent reflective piece composed as a response to his injury. The injury, caused when Scriabin’s overexerted his fingers (which barely stretched to a ninth) on his right hand when playing Liszt’s Don Juan and Balakirev’s Islamey, was held to be potentially permanent at the time of the Prelude and Nocturne’s composition. Scriabin’s hand eventually healed, and from this trauma, came his signature penchant for vigorous left hand technique.
