What’s the difference between the FBI and the CIA? FBI stands for Federal Bureau of Investigation, and CIA stands for Central Intelligence Agency. The FBI and CIA are both principal intelligence agencies for the United States, and each do something different for the country. Each agency has special agents, as well as special operations entities such as the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team and the CIA’s Special Activities Center.
