In order to ease the tradee with Europe, China plans to connect the Morava river and The Vardar river with a canal and to link this way the Aegean Sea to the Danube creating this way a shorter maritime way to the center of Europe. In the last years China invested a lot in Europe, especially in the ports of Trieste and Piraeus and it wants to continue its investments with this megaproject, but, as you might expect, this plan has some challenges ahead of it. The canal will cross multiple countries from the Balkans including Serbia and Kosovo and we all know the tensions between the two countries. Another one would be Turkey, which for sure will opose as this project will basically make all the ships to bypass the Turkish Straits. But we’ll talk more about all of this in this video, so make sure you do not miss it. Feel free to write your opinion about this in the commnets. Hope you’ll enjoy the video! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transcript: China plans to dig a canal through the Balkans. Here’s why! You see, this is China’s Maritime Silk road, used to transports its exported goods and the only way to reach Europe is through A couple of major ports like the port of Piraeus and the Italian port of Trieste. The problem is that the goods have to be transported via plane, trucks or train to the major cities of Europe. The only way to reach the rest of Europe by ship is to go through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus Straits and then sail upstream the Danube through cities like Belgrade, Vienna, Budapest and Regensburg. The Rhine-Danube canal could than be used to sail even further, all the way to the North Sea. To shorten this distance with almost one thousand kilometers, China plans to connect the Morava river and Vardar river with a canal connecting this way The Aegean Sea to the Danube. The main challenge of this project would be to make Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece work together. Also, Turkey will certainly oppose this project because if finished, the majority of ships will not use the Turkish straits anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special thanks to MapTiler / OpenStreetMap Contributors and GEOlayers 3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music: Hero’s Theme by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.
