Rodion Shchedrin: Concerto for Orchestra No. 5 “Four Russian Songs“ (1998)

Rodion Shchedrin (b. 1932) has been one of the major exponents of the late and post-Soviet musical landscape. His postmodern, neo-tonal style explores forgotten provincial Russian styles. His Concertos for Orchestra are a perfect example of this neo-folk approach; in his fifth concerto, Shchedrin has resurrected the form of symphonic poem as it tells the story of a sled which voyages through four Russian cities and its travelers listen to four different airs along its way.
