why Tom & Jerry 2021 doesn’t work

I can’t imagine many people had high hopes for a live action Tom and Jerry film, I can’t imagine many people will be surprised that I didn’t like it. Nonetheless, this is a film that reuses some of the classic gags from the original cartoons; why aren’t they funny here like they were in the show? What is it about the slapstick here that they’ve got wrong? And then, by extension, what exactly was it about the original cartoons from the 40’s and 50’s that made them so funny?
