Once upon a time there was a serious called God Of War. This series was so influential that it spawned an entire generation of imitators. After a certain point in the series history, there was a collective of journalists who decided that Kratos was an awful character, and some sort of indictment of the macho culture that surrounded gaming at the time. this narrative was bolstered by the 2018 game which took things in a much more “mature“ direction, which prompted all of these people to say that God Of War had finally grown up, and Kratos was finally a good character. As a veteran of the series, who’s played these games enough times since 2010 to understand the narrative structure, this has always irked me. So in this character analysis of God of War’s protagonist Kratos, I will attempt to explain and no uncertain terms why Kratos was always a good character, and why God Of War was always deep. I’m not the first person to say this, but I feel that I had to put my own spin on this topic.
