Two Italian marines have been returned to India to stand trial for the shooting deaths of two fishermen they mistook for pirates.“ On Feb. 15, 2012 the Indian fishing boat St. Antony stopped to give way to the Italian oil tanker Enrica Lexie. The Enrica Lexie’s captain, Umberto Vitelli, says his ship was fired upon by the Indian vessel and that two marines on his tanker returned fire in self defense. The Indian crew of the St. Antony say they were fired upon without provocation, resulting in the deaths of crew members Ajesh Binki and Gelastine Valentine.“ The two Italian marines were returned to India after Italy obtained guarantees that Indian prosecutors would not seek the death penalty.
