Using Havening to Enhance Intimacy in Relationships with Dr. Kate Truitt
In this psychoeducation video, walks us through how to use havening to enhance intimacy in relationships. She begins by explaining that self-havening consists of three soothing touches that engage receptors in our skin which have direct links up to our brain. When the receptors are engaged, or inerated, they create a calm, soothing environment in our system.
She then discusses the importance of having a space where our mind and body feel safe in a relationship. In order to bring havening into the relationship, both partners should learn the havening touches and cultivate a distraction inventory.
When our amygdala identifies a potential threat, it can take over our brain. Distractions can help pull our thinking brain back online, and they can be anything that’s fun or interesting to do. Dr. Kate also recommends the push pause tool, which creates space for both members to step back and utilize CPR for the Amygdala.
Coregulation occurs as both partners take that moment to calm down their systems. It also enhances safety and connection within the relationship and honors the fact that both partners have complex feelings and emotions.
Facilitated havening, or when one partner facilitates havening touch on the other person, can deepen intimacy as well. It can also be really meaningful to share special memories or moments from the past that the other partner was a part of.
