Strange Bedfellows: “Moonies“ & “Commies“ Join Forces For Peace in Korea

Never in our lifetimes did we think we would see the #Moonies and the #Communists agree on anything -- but there’s a first time for everything. That’s what the “Strange Bedfellows“ podcast is all about: bringing political opponents together to find points of agreement. On this episode, co-host Tyler McConnell and I interviewed Pastor Miilhan Stephens of the Manhattan Family Church, a branch of the Unification Church founded by Sun Myung Moon. His followers, often referred to as “Moonies,“ have been characterized as a cult. The Church’s anti-communism is legendary -- dating back to the Church’s founding in South Korea during the aftermath of the Korean War. Yet, the Church members actually agree with #communists on one extremely important goal: reunification of North and South Korea after more than 70 years of separation and hostility. On “Strange Bedfellows,“ we brought Pastor Stephens together with a communist leader, Caleb Maupin, founder of the Center for Political Innovation (CPI), for an amazing conversation. To everyone’s surprise, these two political opposites found much common ground between them. Their respective groups recently co-sponsored a large Peace March to the United Nations in New York City to plead the case not just for #peace on the Korean peninsula, but an end to the war between #Russia and #Ukraine. Despite their ideological and political differences, Maupin and Stephens agreed to work together for world peace -- and here at “Strange Bedfellows,“ we think that’s a beautiful example we could all learn from in these politically divisive times.
