Bossa Nova on the BASS : please avoid this common mistake

The tips I give in this video are based on my transcriptions of numerous Albums of Tom Jobim, João Gilberto and many others. Here are tips and links you may find useful : 👉 In the first recordings of Bossa Nova, the bass is very often played by an upright bass 👉 At the bass you have a strong rhythmical role : work on your rhythmic placement accuracy 👉 Bass lines in samba are a subtle art, in between the role of the surdo and the “baixarias“, melodic lines played by the guitar in samba and choro (some baixarias here ) 👉 If you play these Bossa patterns in a samba band that will work. And if there’s already someone playing baixarias (like a guitar player) that’s what will work the best. 👉 chronologically speaking : Choro → Samba → Bossa Nova Samba de roda with the surdo : Samba backing tracks : playback Samba de Roda (instruments, breaks and tips) THE samba rhythm : Girl From Ipanema without the bass : Bossa Nova drums backing track (from 90 bpm to 140 bpm) drums Albums to listen to =============== Muicha & Jobim → Elis & Tom → A C J the composer of Desafinado, plays → The Astrud Gilbeto album → Getz/Gilberto → João Gilberto - Chega de saudade → A.C. Jobim, Live in Montréal → The 2 albums I found with the “not so typical“ bassline : Stone Flower → Jobim & Mendes → Free Cavaquinho lesson (in French) → 00:00 Intro 00:40 - Playing on the beat 02:24 - Main pattern 04:56 - Simple exercise 06:24 - More groove! 08:42 - Things to avoid 11:31 - The pick! 12:24 - Neck section 13:14 - Girl from Ipanema 14:21 - To go further 16:44 - Thank you Patreons! #bass #bossanova #jobim
