The Moroccan Interior Ministry noted that most of the destruction occurred outside of populated areas - however, due to the inaccessibility of mountain villages, the exact extent of the disaster is still unknown. A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has struck Morocco, killing at least 1,037 people, injuring more than 1,200, damaging ancient buildings and forcing terrified residents to flee their homes for safety. The death toll was reported Saturday by Morocco’s state television, citing the Interior Ministry. Of the injured, 205 were in critical condition. Local media said roads leading to the mountainous region around the epicenter were clogged with vehicles and blocked by collapsed rocks, slowing rescue efforts.
