Footage of Henri Matisse making a paper cut out

A gorgeous bit of footage of Henri Matisse making one of his paper cut outs. Collage is an excellent way of quickly developing a composition. You can easily consider the blank rectangle/square that is your canvas and how you will fill it by dividing it up into shapes of differing tonal value. This is one exercise we practise on our Tone Composition and Visual Language course at Studio Hugo Grenville, as it allows our students to gain further understanding of colour, tone and composition all in a single morning!
