Earthquake in Japan with magnitude 7.6. Tsunami 5 meters high

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck central Japan today, January 1, 2024, causing a tsunami. A tsunami about 1 meter high hit part of the coast of the Sea of Japan, and a larger wave of up to 5 meters is expected. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama, the highest alert level. The torii gate at Ono-Hiyoshi Shrine in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture has reportedly collapsed. The footage shows damage to houses and other infrastructure; more details will be known later.
