Mictlan | The Aztec Underworld

In most mythologies, the transition to the afterlife is fairly straight forward. Sometimes there is a test or a final judgment, but in Aztec mythology, the deceased were destined to make pilgrimage to the bottom-most level of Mictlan, the land of the dead. In an odyssey that is said to last four years, the departed had to make their way through vast rivers, mountain passes where hills smash into each other, obsidian paths, vicious beasts and a whole lot more!
