Jamuary 06 2022 Dark Ambient Drone - MicroFreak, Microcosm, Monologue, Volca Drum, FM #jamuary2022

Here’s a long, slow, dark ambient drone in D minor. It’s inspired by SynthSeeker’s recent video on super slow LFOs for slowly changing timbres. The WaveUser wavetable oscillator on the MicroFreak, coupled with some effects, is the perfect candidate for generating slowly evolving soundscapes. The patches for the MicroFreak, Monologue and the three Zoom-MS70CDRs are included below. Patch notes are included in the video during the jam. The Korg Monologue plays a slow mellow bass sequence. Oscillator 1 plays a gentle sawtooth wave, while oscillator 2 is a sync’ed saw wave, with the envelope modulating the pitch, so it glides through the overtones. I fade between the oscillators manually during the jam, and play with the filter cutoff and resonance a bit. On the MicroFreak, the LFO moves super slowly between the different waves in a wavetable, while the Cyclic Envelope creates a gentle beating sound, sometimes reminiscent of a church bell, sometimes more like a church organ. During the jam, I change the wavetable, as well as the filter cutoff, resonance, and rise and fall of the cyclic envelope. I trigger misc percussive sounds on the Volca Drum, and some gentle melodic plings and plucks on the Volca FM. Three Zoom MS-70CDRs, a Microcosm and a Source Audio Collider makes sure the raw sounds from the synths are lifted up and into space. The Microcosm is used as a send effect, with the Mosaic 3 algorithm. The Volca FM patch is called “Axe“. It’s from one of the public domain DX7 libraries floating around in the interwebs. The MicroFreak patch “DarkDroneWF“ can be downloaded from the Arturia MicroFreak facebook group. The Korg Monologue patch “DarkDroneWF“ can be downloaded from the Korg Monologue Patch Sharing Group on facebook. The Zoom MS-70CDR patches are included below. To load a patch into the MS-70, connect your MS-70 to your computer using a USB cable, go to , right-click an available patch slot, select “Import Patch from text“, and paste in this text.
