On 13 January 2012, the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia struck an underwater rock, capsized after it struck rocks off the coast of Giglio Island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and sank in shallow waters off Tuscany, resulting in 32 deaths. It is the worst cruise disaster the Titanic. More than 4,200 people were rescued, though 32 people died. Several of the ship’s crew, notably Capt. Francesco Schettino, were charged with various crimes.
