Richard Wagner | Der Ring des Nibelungen | Das Rheingold | Teatro alla Scala | 2010

With Guy Cassiers’ production of Das Rheingold, Milan’s La Scala opened Richard Wagner’s Ring tetralogy in 2010, presenting the audience with an entirely new perspective on the Ring of the Nibelung. While they had been accustomed to Patrice Chéreau’s revolutionary interpretation, they now experienced a confrontation of historical events with the present and future. It is a utopia that places Wagner’s principles from 1870 in the context of the globalized world of 2010. Wagner was 35 years old when he began telling this story in 1848. Das Rheingold is a marvelous synthesis of magical theater and family saga, without which history, religion, and myth would be unthinkable. Thanks to the casting of outstanding soloists like René Pape, Stephan Rügamer, Johannes Martin Kränzle, Anna Larsson, and Daniel Barenboim as the musical director, this production is sure to captivate you. Recorded live at the Teatro alla Scala Milan, May 26, 2010 Orchestra of the Teatro
