fencing in leather-soled shoes

Here i’m fencing in some leather-soled* dress shoes to test the effect of leather-soled ’period’ shoes (yes, I know this isn’t a perfectly valid test, and I would actually like to try this in accurately hand-stitched German reproduction shoes from 1570, and I’m sure someone will tell me that *those* shoes would make a HUGE difference... =P ). My conclusion: when using proper footwork, the biggest factor is the floor surface, not the shoe! I was able to use, for all intents & purposes, the exact same type of footwork that I use with modern fencing shoes. They had less traction than a modern fencing shoe, but the difference was easy to adapt to. *actually there is a very small, 1/4“ hard-rubber strip on the back edge of the heel, mostly to prevent wear
