Where does seafood like your favourite sashimi come from? Possibly Thailand - it is one of the world’s biggest seafood exporters, worth US$6 billion in exports in 2018. The Thai fishing industry employs more than 800,000 people, many of them trafficked migrants from the poorest areas in Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia, who face starvation, death and murder at sea. Since 2015, the Thai government has taken steps to crack down on forced labour practices, but loopholes and corruption undermine efforts, and observers like the International Labour Organization say there’s still work to be done.
