KMZ Helios-33 (1981) vs Lomo OKS 1-40-1 (1982): cine lens comparison (Lomo OKC spherical)

KMZ Helios 33 is a 35mm F2 cine lens designed in 1949, based off the Cooke Panchro planar type optical scheme. The Lomo OKS 1-40-1 is a late 1950’s development, KMZ initially produced the RO-62 40mm F2.5 design which later evolved into the Lomo OKS series. The Lomo 35mm lenses (which would match the Helios-33 in terms of focal length) were very different optical designs (not planars), so I compared the Helios 33 (35mm planar) against the Lomo OKS 1-40-1 (40mm planar) despite the obvious differences in focal length. Both lenses were designed for Super-35 film but cover close to full frame. The resulting vignette is minimal on the 1-40-1. Footage shot on the Sigma FP in 12-bit DNG raw, 4K (worse rolling shutter performance than 1080p). Debayered into the BlackMagic Color space and graded within Davinci wide gamut. Same exact grade applied across all shots to preserve the natural differences in temperature (Helios-33 yields colors more on the cool side).
