It immediately attracted great attention, and has been performed many times since. The work is asummary of the new world of musical experience that the composer had begun to explore from the end of the 1960s. The score was commissioned by Radio Denmark, which permitted him, during composition, to try out his orchestral effects using its house ensemble.
