A wild and crazy day of testing an early version of the ART Turbine. If you look closely at the upper left , notice the anemometer slowly spinning. By comparing the tip speed of the anemometer and the turbine, you can see that even this early version of the turbine, in winds around 5km/hr, we were able to reach TSR 1. The root of this design is the Savonius turbine patented in the 30’s, it has a TSR of .5 Our latest turbine (seen in the moving platform video) has a TSR of greater than 2! A 400% improvement! These TSR #’s are all freewheeling, when loaded our latest turbine #16 has an optimal TSR of around 1.8 whereas a loaded historic Savonius has an optimal TSR of around .3-.4 If you want to see what the design can do, check out the ART Rotor #16 on a moving platform video!
