NEW Maserati Ghibli Trofeo 2021 review: Italy’s answer to the BMW M5

Powered by a Ferrari-sourced twin-turbo V8, the Ghibli Trofeo is here to prove the Italian’s can beat Mercedes-AMG and BMW M at their own game. Or can it? Unlike the M5 Competition and AMG E63 S, the Ghibli Trofeo seems like a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, it’s powered by a supercar engine with 580hp and 730Nm of torque which, unlike M and AMG cars, is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Sounds sporty, right? Well, being a Maserati it seems much happier when it’s being treated as a gran tourer as opposed to a track-honed racer.
