PYONGYANG SAYS WAR ON PENINSULA MATTER OF TIME

한 주간 외신 속 한반도 뉴스 Hello. You’re watching Thursday’s edition of Issues and Insiders. I’m Min Sunhee. Tensions on the Korean peninsula are mounting and the latest hard-line rhetoric by North Korea is doing little to ease concerns. For more I have Andres Sanchez Braun here in the studio. Andres welcome. I also have Sebastien Falletti with us. Sebastien it’s good to have you here. 1) Andres, let’s start with the mounting regional security concerns. Pyongyang has claimed war on the peninsula is a matter of time, not possibility. Do tell us more about this claim and its background. 2) Sebastien, simply speaking, what do you believe are the chances of a military confrontation here on the peninsula, and why? 3) Andres, given the ongoing armed conflicts in Ukraine and in Gaza, what look to be the broader implications of a military clash here in this part of the world, and what can be done to avoid it? 4) Sebastien, following North Korea’s recent launch of a spy satellite into space, South Korea, this past weekend, put into orbit a similar mission, and on Monday, it tested a solid-fuel rocket. What more can you tell us? 5) Andres, staying on the defense front but moving beyond the peninsula. Korea recently sealed a deal for the sale of more K9 howitzers to Poland. Do tell us about this latest deal, and what are pundits saying about South Korea’s ambitious plan to become the 4th largest arms exporter by 2027? 6) Sebastien, France, for its part, is among the world’s greatest arms exporter. What more can you share with us about its arms ambitions? 7) And Andres, while South Korea seeks to join countries like France in the global defense industry, North Korea, I understand, is looking to breathe new life into a special economic zone thanks to Russia. Do tell us more. 8) Sebastien, how worried should the international community be about the active interaction between Pyongyang and Moscow in recent times? 9) Meanwhile, Andres, according to AFP, Russia’s Vladimir Putin recently bemoaned strained relations with the West and also with South Korea. How do you interpret his words? 10) Sebastien, according to South Korean media, Putin reportedly claimed that the future of Seoul-Moscow ties depends on South Korea. What are your thoughts especially keeping in mind recent U.S. media reports about South Korea being a large supplier of ammunition for Ukraine? All right.
