Basle Carnival And Face Painting (1969)

Titles read: ’EXTRA!’ (Basle Carnival.) Several shots of protesters (students?) marching along and carrying banners in the Grosvenor Square demonstration (riot?) in London. We then see several shots of students marching along in the Basle Carnival in Switzerland, where they are allowed to protest and lampoon politics and well-known figures. Most are dressed in bizarre costumes and masks. Several beat drums as they march along and play piccolos. Small crowds of people stand in the rain to watch the parade. Students wearing grotesque masks throw food (?) to the spectators. It all looks very surreal. Cut to C/U of a woman with her face painted with a fabulous psychedelic design in pink and black. M/S of her chatting to a woman with her entire face covered with white, pink, black and blue sequins, to look almost like a pierot - she also has pink hair! Other women with painted faces chat to the first pair. Great C/Us of a woman having her face painted in shades of brown, gold, amber and blue
