Che se tu se’il cor mio (featuring Schloss Braunfels)
One of my favorite madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi, this rendition is by the Himig Singers. Below is its English translation :
For if, as I believe, you really love me
despite the counsel of the jealous world,
just as the winds are gathered by the tree,
your sufferings are drawn towards my soul;
and there I tend them so they multiply
and root in to my heart, and then my mind
till tears run in my veins, I breathe your sighs,
and all your sorrow and your grief is mine.
Look at me now; what is in your heart?
What anxieties are there? What fears?
For I am walking in the freezing rain
calling and calling to you through the storm,
although I know you cannot hear my cries
and your name will vanish with the winds.
Schloss Braunfels (Germany) is one of the castles I’ve visited with my choir, the Himig Singers, when we toured some countries in Europe way back in the mid to late 90’s. It’s one of my fondest memories.
