The song of the cello is an elegy. The song of the guitar - is a song). In the first film (Segovia at los Olivos), Segovia talks on camera. In the second, his voice is out of vision, except for a short statement at the beginning and he talks not about his career, but about his youth and about the spirit in which he set out on his remarkable quest - a great artist in late maturity remembering the genesis of his extraordinary journey. lt is made as a poetic recollection of the atmosphere rather than the facts of his passionate beginnings nearly 70 years earlier - and Andrés Segovia was a poet in almost everything that he did. The idea was clearly promising, but the Alhambra is one of the world’s great tourist attractions and draws more than 4,000 tourists every day during the summer. We had to live with that and so, each evening, we had to wait until the tourists had gone before we could even start setting up the lights and the cameras. We generally started at about 10:00 p.m. and we called our artist only when we were ready. We avoided the heat but it meant that we started filming well after midnight every night and worked until about 4 o’clock in the morning. Spanish timing - nothing new for Andrés Segovia. In his youth he often played for his friends in the Alhambra after midnight and he gave many a late night recital there at the Granada Festival. So the setting is as legitimate as it is glorious. He plays music by Albeniz, Granados, Scariatti, Rameau, Sor, Ponce, Aguado, Bach, Chopin and Torroba.
