Half of Hong Kong is underwater! The worst flood in history in China after Typhoon Haikui Natural disaster 8 September 2023. Asian financial hub Hong Kong was drenched in the heaviest rain on Friday since records began 140 years ago. As a result, 83 people were injured, media reported. The video shows water cascading down steep slopes in the former British colony, flooding shopping centres, metro stations and tunnels. The extreme weather also brought chaos to the nearby Chinese city of Shenzhen, a technology hub of more than 17.7 million people. At the same time, business and transport links through the economically important Pearl River Delta were seriously affected. The heavy rain was caused by Typhoon Haikui, which made landfall in China’s Fujian province on Tuesday. Although it weakened to a tropical depression, its slow-moving clouds dumped huge amounts of rain across the area. The Hong Kong Meteorological Bureau issued a warning for the heaviest “black“ rainfall and said more than 20 centimeters of rain had been recorded since Thursday evening. Hong Kong authorities closed schools on Friday and ordered workers to stay home. The city’s stock exchange was also closed. The administration secretary said the city’s transport network was “severely disrupted“ and the “extreme situation“ would last until midnight on Friday. Some roads were partially washed out, including the main route to the city’s southern beaches. The car was swallowed up by a pothole several meters wide when one section of the road collapsed. The China Meteorological Administration also said that heavy rain will continue until Saturday morning in the central and southwestern regions of Guangdong province. All schools, some metro stations and offices in the Guangdong city of Shenzhen were closed on Friday. Naturals hazards in 2022 have become more frequent. We do not know what awaits us in 2024.
