4K - Mercedes vs Tree - Fatal Head-On Collision near UCI & Bethel Church in Irvine, CA

| 4:09 AM | Bethel Church | 18700 Harvard Ave | Irvine, CA Early Saturday morning, first responders were alerted to a single-vehicle crash-with-fire near the University of Irvine campus in the city of Irvine. Upon arrival, Orange County Fire Firefighter-Paramedics discovered a black and silver Mercedes S550 sedan engulfed in flames after a high-speed head-on crash into a tree in front of Bethel Church parking lot. There were no visible skid marks on the road behind the vehicle at the crash site. Regrettably, the driver of the Mercedes did not survive the wreck and was pronounced DOA. Although the speed limit on that stretch of Harvard Ave. is 45 mph, the higher 55 mph speed limits of the Irvine streets have not infrequently resulted in severe traffic accidents stemming from drivers regularly apprehended for racing there, according to statements made by local police officers at the scene. Harvard Ave between Michelson Dr and University Dr was closed for several hours while the Crime Scene Investigation unit examined the area. The crash is currently under investigation by the Irvine Police Department. Tragic echoes of a similar 2019 traffic accident at that location drew inevitable comparison. While three young men in a Mercedes Benz sedan perished after a head-on collision with a tree, followed by an engine fire, witnesses at the scene pulled a fourth critically injured occupant from the wreckage.
