Niger coup: Military deals with France revoked amid growing pro-Russia sentiment

Niger’s military junta revoked a raft of military cooperation agreements with France on Thursday amid a growing wave of anti-French sentiment with some locals accusing the former colonial ruler of interfering in their affairs. Meanwhile, a German government official said on Friday, that Germany had no knowledge about Russian forces playing a role in the coup but noted there had been an increase in pro-Russian disinformation. The Kremlin responded Friday to a question about a call from Niger’s ousted president, Mohamed Bazoum, for the United States to lead an international intervention to restore constitutional order in the West African country. “It is unlikely that the intervention of non-regional forces is capable of changing the situation for the better,“ Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
