BUY - ‘Expansion’ is the second single from Melbourne-based, Finn Rees’ debut album, Dawn Is A Melody. A Brazilian-inspired, spirit-embracing jazz immersion, that nods to greats like Luiz Eça, Dom Salvador and Cesar Camargo Mariano yet showcases the vibrancy of Finn’s contemporary palette. “This live shoot was a real energetic one to film involving some of the Melbourne/Naarm’s best local musicians and dear friends of mine. Lucky Pereira’s undeniable rhythm and Blakely McLean Davies’ bass line kicks off the piece with a Brazilian inspired feel and the rest of the ensemble cascading over the top. The horn section (Niran Dasika, Cheryl Durongpisitkul and Will Larsen) glides as one with the cosmic layers of percussion (Robyn Poppins), harp (Siwei Wong) and vocals and shakers (Allysha Joy) filling the canvas with colour. I really felt like I was riding on top of a wave of music with the grand piano and synths both physically positioned on stage overlooking the hall and musically free to weave in and out of the other elements. It was a real fun one to bring together with every member shining through. Cheryl’s incredible sax solo really cuts through as the piece develops. With so many people in the ensemble and such limited time to get it done we ended up using the last take of the day for the final product. It was a matter of ‘okay okay if we don’t get it done in this one we’re stuffed’, but luckily everything clicked at that moment.
