Swinging Soul Machine - Stop The Machine (1969) TopPop
Swinging Soul Machine was a Rotterdam soul band in the sixties with singer Iwan ‘Spooky’ Groeneveld.
Swinging Soul Machine was founded in 1966 by Oeni Shen and Jan de Bliek. Guitarist Hans Kuttschreuter and cousins Jan and Willem Warbie were also part of the first line-up. Shen was replaced after some time by Iwan “Spooky“’ Groeneveld. In the early years the Swinging Soul Machine grew into a popular live act, not only in the nightlife of Rotterdam, but also far beyond.
1969 was the successful year for Swinging Soul Machine. Pop producer Jaap Eggermont recorded the song ’Spooky’s Day Off’ in the GTB Studio in The Hague. The 7 inch vinyl single Nobody Wants You / Spooky’s Day Off spent 14 weeks in the Top 40, highest position 2. As the title indicates, the members of the group were not active full-time professionally as musicians and the song of the original B side recorded when singer “Spooky“ Groeneveld had a day off. The A-side had the song Nobody Wants You. The song Spooky’s Day Off was written by Paul Vink in his parental home. It was in the Top 40 for fourteen weeks in 1969 and finally reached #2 in the Dutch Top 40 on March 1, 1969.
Spooky’s Day Off was released on the LP Through The Eye. This album contains nine songs written by Paul Vink alone and two songs jointly by Paul Vink and Jan Warbie.
In 1969 the single Stop The Machine / The Horns Of Victory was released. This song spend nine weeks the Top 40, with a highest position of no. 6. This song was also written by Paul Vink.
