Queen - Live in Sun City, South Africa (October 19th, 1984) - Soundboard Recording
Jesus Christ, my life is busy. School and marching band is going on and indoor marching band is happening soon. That’s what happens in high school though. I’m not used to it, I’m a freshman, but I have to get used to it eventually. Also sorry for the late upload.
Anyways, sorry about that, I’mma go on about the show now.
This is one of the more important and fine shows on the Works Tour, if not the finest. The band are in good form and Freddie is much better than he usual is and doesn’t ultra-macho every single song. He nails some studio phrasings in different songs such as “Killer Queen“, “Hammer To Fall“, and “Bohemian Rhapsody“. Speaking of “Hammer To Fall“, this is probably it’s greatest performance ever. On par with Live Aid in several areas. There is a masterclass impromptu performed here as well.
The documental importance of this concert, however, is with what was happening in South Africa at the time. The apartheid. Black Africans were being forced into ghettos and Afrikaners (white Africans) were enjoying the culture from the other parts of the world and depriving the black African people of their luxuries to see those influential people or cultures. Queen still went though and stated their reason was apolitical and that they just wanted a place to perform. And because of Queen performing there multiple nights in a row, there was international backlash worldwide and it ended up getting to the point to where Queen were blacklisted in the United Nations. Brian May later said that if he could start it over again, he wouldn’t have gone to South Africa.
Hope you enjoy.
