Trained as a painter, he decided to pursue acting after watching Sir Laurence Olivier III. He began his career as a stage and radio performer. At the age of 24, he made his Australian film debut; but soon after, he moved to the US, where he was cast as a supporting actor in a series of films the following year. At the age of 30, he landed his first leading role, playing H. G. Wells in The Time Machine; the role immediately launched him to stardom. Despite his popularity in Hollywood, he remained an Australian citizen until 1982.
