WHY we are ACCELERATING SUCCESSION in the MARKET GARDEN | PERMACULTURE FOOD FOREST GARDEN

At Tap o’ Noth Farm we have always planned for mixed, tree based perennials to supersede areas of our annual based market garden. In this video we discuss the idea of working with and accelerating natural succession by changing areas of the market garden over to a mixed orchard or forest garden. We look at how we have already integrated perennials (trees, shrubs, herbs etc) into our small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) market garden enterprise over the past six seasons with linear forest gardens hedgerows that frame and interject the vegetable plots. Due to slowly shifting our focus from small scale commercial vegetable production and developing new on farm enterprises, we also discuss how the decommissioned vegetable plots are beginning to show signs of reverting back to their pre-cultivated plant communities. We intend to encourage this demonstration of forest ecosystem succession and also aid in the acceleration of this process by experimenting with seeding the plots with an understor
